Dear Reader,

Hello, welcome to my blog,

My name is Melissa C. and you are currently viewing the blog for my E-portfolio. It is all about what I did in my English 98 class spring quarter. I have been going to Evcc for the past year and a half. It has been a long ride, but I have learned a lot and this class has taught me how we use sentence structure and how we can overcome the anxiety we had about writing.

English 98 has taught me a great deal about paragraphs and essays. For me the most part of the class was a brush up of what I learned in English 97, although I did learn some great techniques like how to reword a sentence to make it flow in a paragraph. I also learned how to create a great thesis statement by thinking of a topic and writing it down with a few Ideas to creating a statement that can be argued or persuaded. This class has helped me with a few struggles that I did have like paraphrasing and sentence structure. By the end of the quarter it got a lot easier to use the different types of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Now I can say that I am ready for English 101

Intro: To Discrimination in our world

This first piece I decided to show you is a major witting assignment written in the middle of the quarter. We had to write an essay about a word, describe what it meant and how is is used and what it means today. My word really didn't change much because it is the same where ever anyone goes. In this piece of discribtive writting I gave me the power of using my own personal words into the discribtive peice. I think that words today has many different meanings and many don't think of the outcome of the words we use.
This paper has helped me be a better writer to give a great essay.

For Example: Discrimination is to give disrespect of another person by judging someone by their nature of origin.

This descriptive essay gave me power on how I could used different words with different phrases and the way we use language to day in our society. This essay has given me a sense of how a essay is supposed to be written and how well you can describe a word with out using the definition out of the dictionary.

Discrimination in our world

To give disrespect of another person by judging someone by their nature or origin is how it becomes part of everyone’s life. Have you ever heard the term “never judge a book by its cover?” Discrimination is an issue that everyone has concerns about; weather it be age, race, religion, gender or any person different than another. To judge a person on how they look, how they act, or even how they smell is discrimination. Many do not want to bring up the topic or words because of the past and the outcome of the future. There are many different way we can use discriminating words. How we treat people in today society is how we can overcome our fear of letting people know that our world has different cultures and not to judge a person on the outside; it is what is on the inside that counts.

In our divers culture today there should not be any discrimination against another, but you would be surprised at how many people are discriminated against. Most people are aware of the fact that people have rights and equal opportunities. Although there are many way to describe discrimination in today’s society; the fact is that many people are still are getting abused in many ways. For example if there is a person who has a disability that cannot perform a job duty and is released from that position it is discrimination. For more than a decade people have struggled for the right not to be in a place were they will be judged or characterized by how they are.

Racism is discrimination against people of color. It is distinguishing the differences between human being. To be in a position that prohibits someone to do their job because of their race or color of their skin; is discrimination. There are many ways people can (beat around the bush) “If I may say.” by just giving that disgusting look that people get when something smells bad; you can sense that you are getting treated in a different way. It hurts when someone gets put down because of their color.

Gender is discrimination toward the opposite sex. Stereotyping held by society is many ways women workers still are getting paid only 70% of what the men make. It is hard to get a pay raise or climb the corporate ladder. Many employees do give the promotions in the increasing gender society, but there are people out there that think the women should stay in the kitchen.

Age is discrimination that adolescent or minorities have a lower standard of grasping the whole concept of having responsibilities’ that many are put in a group of the careless teenagers. Even employer have discrimination against the age of the work force, although in today’s society many minorities are responsible enough to become one of the best employees at a job.
Nevertheless, there are many who have discrimination against a person over the age of 50; many employers do not like to hire a person who is at of age or they are ready to retire. The employer has discrimination against people who cannot keep up with the work force. They believe that the person cannot perform the techniques that the job requires.

Religion is discrimination, although people who believe in god or Mary are the one who are going to be saved. There is a discrimination of the different types of beliefs that one will say god will save us and another would say that Mary will come to save us all. There are many ways in which you could say that one religion is better than the other, but matter at hand of discrimination each religion has different out looks on how the world was created and how we are all going to be saved.

Many of society keeps discrimination on a low level of secrecy, but the fact is that we all have been discriminated against in one point and time. What better way to reduce societies out look on what is right and what is wrong. Many fear the potential risk involved in the discussion of race, age, gender and religion. The possibilities of out future are endless; if we can put our discrimination aside and look on the bright side of the people around us.

Many keep the rude and insane comments to their selfs in today’s society, but it is still out there for someone to abuse the personal space of another.
To judge a person about how they look, they smell, they live and putting them down for the way they are is discrimination. Many people would find it rude, ignorant, or just plain stupid to complain on how a person is.

Intro: To Combining sentences

This next piece I chose to show you is a homework assignment of sentence structure, that I took two or three sentences and made them in to one whole sentence.
I wanted to show you as a writer that doing this homework gave me a better understanding of what a complete sentence and a complex sentence should be. Also, the way that I could use different definition and words in my sentences.
I will give you some examples of the homework that has brought me great ways to use complex sentences.

For example: Hartford is the capital of Connecticut.
It is the second largest city in the state.

Correct: Hartford is the capital of Connecticut, witch is the second largest city in the state.

Incorrect: Hartford was once known as an industrial center.
It was the home of several manufacturers.
They made firearms, typewriters, bicycles, and even cars.

Correct: Hartford was once known as an industrial center however, it was the home of several manufacturers like firearms, typewriters, bicycles, and even cars.

Incorrect: Today, through, several insurance companies make Hartford their home.
Aentna, the Travelers, the Hartford, and Cigna are in Hartford.
Their home offices are within miles of one another.

Correct: Although several insurance companies like the Aetna, the Travelers, the Hartford, and the Cingna are within miles from each other; Hartford is their home.

Before many of my sentences were incomplete or just didn't make any sense, but know I can write complete sentences and paragraphs to make the it follow. This is a great example of what English 98 has given me. To make me a better and more precise writer.
A sense that I can write a strong and vibrant essays.

Intro: To I am the enemy

The next one I want to show you is a piece form English 98 class toward the middle of the quarter. I think it is my strongest piece of work I had done in this class. This paper was a critical analysis paper about scientist using animals for testing and how many see them as cold hearted and nonemotional doctors. On the other hand, doctors do not test on aninmals just because they did not care for the animals however, without animal testing many humans would not be cured by the diseases.
The point of this essay is to give the reader a chance to see both sides of the story.

critical analysis

I am the Enemy written by Ron Kline is a pediatric oncologist who has written essay about animal studies.

Ron says" much is made of the pain inflicted on these animals are in the name of medical science." To hope that one day testing of animals could one day help save lives.

Ron also gives a great insight on how the animal testing has helped overcome cancer, leukemia, and other diseases. If the research was severally restricted it could be very dramatic to humans, to medical research, and to humans as we know it.
Although, there are many who think that the animals are being mistreated to human nature, but the fact of it is that without medical testing the advancement in medical research will diminish. Many doctors do care for the animals and try to treat with respect. With these studies on animals we could overcome many of the tragedies that have left our world in shambles.
This essay has given me a way of deep thought and a sense of different ways to word many of the paragraphs. It helped me give a great analysis on the whole subject, not just taking one side.
This story had a person impact on my life because I love animals, so I think that If scientist treats animals with respect than I guss its okay as long as they treat animals with decency.

Intro: To The Pursuit of Happyness

The last piece I decided to share with my readers is about a book called;
The pursuit of happyness.
In English 98 toward the end of the quarter we read this book about a man who grew up in terrible enviorment. I chose to write a summery on the book to give other students what I thought about the story. For example: Chris gardener doesn't seem to dwell on the things that go wrong in his life, but learns from them. This story has such a feel to the way that he endures the enviorment and seems to enjoy life's pleasures just a little more than you or me. Although he learns to live with what he has. I think this inspirational story might give someone hope for the future. I took it back to my childhood and I think that I actually had a good life. Even though, we did not have much and we were in poverty. Chris had it bad, with the mental anguish and how he was always living on the edge, scared for his life most of the time.

Chris Gardener, Is a stunning and courageous person with rags to riches story, but to him being rich was not that important, He actually thought to be rich meant you had food in your belly, and a roof over your head. Not how much money you were going to make.

If you can dream it, you can become it.

Seminar Paper #1

Pursuit of Happyness

(pg40) Dismissive--- Indicating rejection, especially showing contempt or differences
(pg23) Pragmatic--- Practical results with theories and principles
(pg115) Unsophisticated- inexperienced, not wise in the ways of the world
(pg57) Realm-- scope of something, area of interest
(pg52) casbah—the older part of a city or town in North Africa

(Chapter 3 pg. 67)
Uncle Henry not only made me feel special but allowed me, for the fist time ever, to feel love for a man- in the way that boys fall in love with their fathers and yearn to be like them one day.

This part touched my heart, to know he had an image to look up to.
Uncle Henry was a very special guy to Gardner; he treated him with the kindness that Gardner always wanted out of a father figure. He felt love for the fist time and that has always stuck with him throughout life.

(Chapter 4 pg.77)

People stopped and stared, saying nothing, but obviously thinking what is he doing to that child? What’s wrong with that baby?

I chose this passage because I was a little confused on who DeShanna was to Gardner. The little girl didnt know him and refused to go with him, but as I read on Gardner was taking DeShanna to Ophelia’s house so that they can visit. I thought that was very kind of Gardner to do that for his sister.

(Chapter 5 Pg.113)

“Oh shit,” he said, not even finishing the statement before I crowned him with the cinder block, bearing down with all my strength on the top of his head.
At fist, he didn’t fall, but he faltered. After more pounding, he finally crumpled to the sidewalk, and I threw the brick down, walked away.
Didn't look back, didn’t run. Right or wrong, I silently said the last words that I’d ever think about him----Got you motherfucking ass.

This passage gave me a sense that Gardner was not putting up with Freddie any more, He gave me respect for what he did. Although Freddie knew it was coming to him and Freddie knew that was for beating up his mother for so many years. Gardner became a hero in my book because he put his courage and his anger out on Freddie. I would have done the same, maybe even worse, because I can relate to how much hatred that you can have on someone who has hurt someone close to your heart.

The pursuit of happiness is a great book. Gardner explains the hardship and the pain that he and his family had endured in the past. Many of the issues that surrounded Gardner was all the violence toward blacks, all the drugs and alcohol, but Gardner stood his ground and finished high school, while having a job. He is a very courageous person who doesn’t seem to dwell on the things that go wrong in his life, but he learns a lot of lessons thru his life.

To my readers, Thank you!!!
